Roanoke Notches Second-Straight Shutout in 6-0 win over Philadelphia Bible
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke racked up the goals in a 6-0 win over Philadelphia Bible University in the 2009 Roanoke Invitational Friday evening. The Maroons improved to 2-0 while the Eagles dropped its first match of the season.
Taylor Johnston (Charleston, WV, Capital)had a goal and two assists in the win, which was the most goals scored against a non-conference opponent since Oct. 2, 2007 against Southern Virginia.
The Maroons outshot the Eagles, 29-3, led by Tim Dunn (Towson, MD, Towson)with five, three on goal which included his first goal of the season in the 84th minute from Chris Conover (Dagsboro, DE, Indian River). It was Conover's' first career assist. Roanoke held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Matt Standley (Richmond, VA, Home School) found an open Kayvon Sarmadi (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)who shot from the top of the box to give the Maroons an early 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest. Four minutes later, Zaan Janse (Wellington, New Zealand, Wellington)scored as did Johnston at the 21-minute mark to give the Maroons a comfortable 3-0 lead and eventually held on for their second-straight shutout victory.
Also scoring for the Maroons were Jon Marc Winchester (Greensboro, NC, Leesville)from Luigi Greco (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)and Chris Collins (Vinton, VA, William Byrd)from Johnston for his second assist of the night.
#Ryan Russell# earned his second win of the season, earning the shutout with Casey Shotts (Virginia Beach, VA, Princess Anne), who finished with one save. PBU's Andy Ecker had 13 saves on the night.
The men will take on #11-ranked Ohio Northern tomorrow night following the Bridgewater/PBU match-up at 5 p.m. The Polar Bears defeated BC, 7-0 in the first game of the invitational. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
