Roanoke Battles #11 Ohio Northern to 1-1 Tie in Roanoke Invitational
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke battled #11-ranked Ohio Northern to a 1-1 tie in the 2009 Roanoke Invitational Saturday evening. Both teams now stand at 2-0-1 on the season.
The Polar Bears outshot the Maroons, 19-13 and held a 8-6 advantage on corner kicks. It was a physical contest, with 25 fouls and four yellow cards and one red card handed to Zaan Janse, who was ejected in the overtime period.
After both teams fought to a scoreless tie in the first half, Chris Collins scored off a penalty kick just two minutes into the second half to take a 1-0 lead.
With only 15-seconds remaining in regulation, Dan Otanicar put a shot just past goalkeeper Ryan Russell through the right side to send the game into overtime.
Mac Church had five saves for Ohio Northern while Russell finished with three for Roanoke. Michael Stark led the Maroons with four shots as Janse and Collins had three shots each.
Roanoke's Russell, Stark and Taylor Johnston made the 2009 Roanoke Invitational All-Tournament Team. For Ohio Northern, Church, Otanicar and Dustin Connor made the all-tournament team.
The men return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 as they host Ferrum College at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons will look to avenge a 1-0 defeat against the Panthers last season. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
