POMONA, NJ - Richard Stockton handed Roanoke its first loss of the season in a 2-1 decision in the Osprey Invitational Saturday evening. The win propels Stockton to a 4-1 mark, while the Maroons' record now stands at 5-1.
Rafael Duartescored with just 2:04 remaining in the contest, giving the Ospreys a 2-1 win. It also gave Stockton coach Jeff Haines his 200th career victory. The Maroons remain winless in the series in five meetings.
Kyle Evansbroke the scoreless tie with a free kick goal to put Stockton up, 1-0 before Roanoke tied it. Cameron Travalini (Millville, DE/Indian River) put in a rebound off of a Michael Stark (Newport News, VA/Menchville) shot to make it 1-1.Duarte's game-winner came off a center pass from Kevin Churchill.
Lou Herring made two saves in the win. The Maroons' Ryan Russell (Danville, VA/GW Danville) and Avery Makel (Nellysford, VA/Nelson County) kicked out seven shots, withMakel making six of them. The loss broke a five-game shutout streak, which passed the 1969 squad for the most consecutive shutouts to start a season. It tied both the 2009 and 2003 teams for the second-most consecutive shutouts in program-history. The 1984 holds that mark with six-straight.
Roanoke returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 15 as the men travel to North Carolina Wesleyan in non-conference action. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
