Six Maroons Earn Men's Soccer All-ODAC Honors
Roanoke had six players on the 2010 Men's Soccer All-ODAC Team announced this morning. Cameron Travalini (Millville, DE, Indian River), Cameron Lee (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring) and Michael Stark (Newport News, VA, Menchville) earned first-team accolades while Chris Conover (Dagsboro, DE, Indian River) and Jason Ryan (Radford, VA, Radford) were named second-team all-conference. Ryan Russell (Danville, VA, GW Danville) was tabbed honorable mention honors.
Stark, who is a two-time NSCAA All-American, was voted First-Team All-ODAC for the third-consecutive season. He led the Maroons in scoring this season with 16 points and in goals with six along with six game-winners. The two-year team captain was second in assists (4), shots (31) and shots on goal (12). Stark was named ODAC Player of the Week twice, the first time a Maroon soccer player has garnered the weekly award more than once in a season. He anchored a defensive unit that didn't allow a single goal at home and the 14 shutouts tied the 1993 team for most in a single-season.
Lee was the quiet giant that gained respect with his physical style of play. He helped lead a backfield that was among the best in the nation in goals against average and in shutout percentage. Lee earned first-team all-conference honors for the second-straight season in addition to his second-team recognition in 2008. The senior defender finished the season with a goal and an assist for three points. In 17 starts, he posted a career-best 11 shots, including two on goal.
Travalini led the frontline of the Maroons lineup this season and came on strong by seasons' end. Named All-ODAC for the second-straight season, he led the team in assists with five and shots on goal with 13. The two-sport star (baseball) was second in goals (5), points (15) and shots with 30. His two best games of the season came in a two goal performance vs. Washington & Lee (9/22) and a one goal, two assists effort against Bridgewater (10/6).
Conover, a first-year starter for the Maroons, earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career. He was part of a defensive unit that was ranked fifth nationally in shutout percentage and 20th in goals against average. The 6-1 sophomore tied for second in assists with four and in 16 starts he finished the fall with 22 shots, eight on goal.
Ryan, a senior captain, earned All-ODAC honors for the first time in his career. He started in 18 games, recording three goals and a team-best five assists for 11 points. Ryan totaled 30 shots, including 12 shots on goal. In the Roanoke Invitational vs. Shenandoah, Ryan scored the game-winner off a penalty kick to give the Maroons a 1-0 victory (9/3). He had a goal and an assist in the ODAC-opener vs. Eastern Mennonite (9/7). He assisted the game-winner off a corner in the 1-0 victory over Averett (9/29).
Russell earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career even with his season cut short due to injury. Before his injury, the two-year starter at goalkeeper was ranked nationally in goals against average (26th) and 90th in save percentage. His defensive unit was fifth in the country in shutout percentage (.74) and the 14 shutouts are tied with the 1993 team for most in a single-season.
Head coach Scott Allison, a 25-year coaching veteran, became the ODAC's career wins leader with 284, passing Washington & Lee's Rolf Pinarian. Late last season, the 1979 Roanoke College graduate, passed Piranian in career conference wins. Allison, who was an NSCAA All-South Region performer for the Maroons from 1975-78, faced the 35-year coaching legend for the Generals as a player.
The Maroons finished the season, 13-3-3, 7-1-3 in the ODAC. Roanoke finished their home portion of the 2010 schedule with an 8-0-2 mark, which is the fourth undefeated home record in the 65-year history of the program. The defensive unit pitched 14 blank sheets, matching the famous 1993 team that advanced to the national quarterfinals and won 20 games.
