The Roanoke College Men's Soccer team has a #13 ranking in the NSCAA Div. III Week One National Poll announced Monday afternoon. The Maroons (2-0) are also second in the South Atlantic Regional Rankings behind Christopher Newport, which is ranked third in the country. The men are tied with Ohio Wesleyan for the 13th spot in the weekly survey.
The Maroons claimed the 20th Roanoke Invitational by knocking off nationally-ranked opponents Richard Stockton (3-1) and #18 Emory (3-2). Richard Stockton upset then-ranked #2 Lynchburg, 1-0 on Saturday night to receive votes the national rankings. Tournament MVP Johnny Hughes earned ODAC Player of the Week honors by scoring a goal in both contests.
Notable teams below CNU and Roanoke in the regional rankings are Richard Stockton (4th), Lynchburg (6th) and Virginia Wesleyan (9th). This is the highest national ranking for the men's soccer program since 2002, when they finished the season 12th in the country after advancing to the NCAA Tournament and capturing the ODAC Championship.
The men will travel this weekend to New Jersey to play in the Stevens Tech College Cup Sept. 9-10. The Maroons will play Kean (1-1) on Friday at 4 p.m. followed by tournament host Stevens Tech (1-1) on Saturday at 8 p.m. Stevens Tech, tabbed #21 in the NSCAA pre-season poll, is currently eighth in the NSCAA East Regional Rankings.
