RC Mourns the Loss of Former Soccer Standout John Browning

SALEM, VA – Roanoke College and the entire Maroon family mourn the loss of former men's soccer All-American John Browning who passed away on April 8.

Browning was a three-time all-region selection and was named a Second-Team All-American in 1984. He was also a two-time All-ODAC selection as well.

Browning's 460 career saves ranks second all-time in Roanoke history, while his .861 save percentage is fourth best in RC history. He had 29 career wins and nine career shutouts.

"I'm shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of John Browning. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends," said former Roanoke Head Coach Rob Brewer. "John was an All-America goalkeeper for me at Roanoke College in the early 80's. He always had a smile on his face and was willing to go the extra mile for a teammate or a young coach like me. John will be missed by many."

"John was the best goalkeeper I ever been associated with as a teammate or as a coach," said former assistant coach Dave Crummitt '84.  "He trained very hard, every day, to get better.  His workouts were off the charts.  Soccer wasn't the only thing John excelled in; he was a great husband to Jill [Ashbury '83 ] and father to Caroline and Judson."
