SALEM � Jim Schaefer will serve as the new head coach of the Roanoke College men's tennis program announced by Director of Athletics, Scott Allison. �He will replace Phil Benne, who will continue in his 25th season as head women's soccer coach.

"For the student-athletes in our men's tennis program, Jim brings a lot to the table," said Allison. �"While his tennis acumen is indeed top notch, what has impressed me most about Jim are his intentions.� He really wants to make an impact on our student-athletes and our program.� At the end of the day, that's what NCAA Division III Tennis is all about."� �

Schaefer comes to Roanoke College as Assistant Head Tennis Pro at Roanoke Country Club, a position he's held since March of 2011.� He is certified under the United States Professional Tennis Association and has served as director and head pro at numerous clubs over the last 30 years.� However, over those past thirty years, Schaefer has continued to compete at a very high level.� He was on the 2013 USTA 4.5 National runner up team from Roanoke.

Schaefer has won a National Gold Ball twice in men's 40's doubles and was part of the men's 40's #1 ranked doubles team from 1999-2000.� During time living in North Carolina, he played in the prestigious Southern Senior Cup, helping lead the North Carolina team to the title in 2004.� Schaefer was also the NC #1 ranked player in men's 45 singles from 2002-2004.

Originally from up-state New York, Jim attended SUNY Courtland where he was a two-sport letterman in both varsity tennis and track.� After college, Jim played professional tennis in both Germany and France.

Schaefer lives in Roanoke with his wife Tracy and their two children, Kylie and Sam.

Schaefer's position begins effective on August 12th.
