Washington and Lee Pulls away to down Roanoke, 12-8 in Women's Lacrosse Action
LEXINGTON --- Roanoke played #15 Washington and Lee in a hard-fought Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest, but fell 12-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field. The Maroons slips to 3-4 overall, 1-1 in the ODAC, while the Generals improve to 6-2, 2-0 in conference play.

Roanoke turned in an early 1-0 lead with a goal by sophomore attacker Allison Bonanno at 26:29. After a W&L goal tied the contest, junior midfielder Kathleen Wager record a second tally for the Maroons to bring the score to 2-1 with 20:40 left in the first half. Wager played in front of her hometown fans as she is a Rockbridge Co. High School product.

The Generals fired back with three-consecutive goals, taking their first lead of the contest at 11:32 off a free position shot by sophomore attacker Greta Witter. One more free position shot by sophomore attacker Margaret Klein pushed W&L's advantage to two points by the 11:05 mark (4-2).

RC kept the game close with two more goals by 9:49 to tie the game at 4-4, but the Blue and White were able to enter the break with a 6-4 lead after sophomore midfielder Meade Brewster connected on two shots to end the period.

The Maroons started the second half with two yellow cards, allowing W&L to score two goals with an extra player by the 25:27 mark and posting 8-4 lead. Wager attempted to make up Roanoke's deficit with a free-position goal at 23:23 (8-5). After Bonanno's goal made it 9-6 with 19:21 on the clock, the Generals fired back-to-back goals to pull away.

The Generals took advantage of six free-position attempts, scoring on all but one on the day. W&L held an advantage in shots (33-26), groundballs (29-28) and draw controls (13-9).

Generals goalie Cara Mulligan sat in net the entire game for the Generals, collecting 10 saves on the day. Freshman Goalie Lauren Curtin recorded 11 saves on the afternoon for the Maroons.

W&L was led by Maddie McKaig, who scored a team-high three goals. Witter and Brewster each tallied three points on two goals and an assist, and first-year midfielder Sammy Yates netted two goals. Christina Benedetti was a strong force on the field, registering six draw controls and three ground balls.

Bonanno and Wager each netted three goals apiece to lead the Maroons. Freshman midfielder Darragh Evarts impacted both ends of the field with two goals, four ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Elizabeth Hartge collected a team-best four groundballs while Wager added three draw controls and two groundballs.

The women return home on Sunday, March 25 as the Maroons will host Randolph-Macon in ODAC action. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
