Salem, Va. --- Senior Meredith Grunewald scored the game-winning goal just two minutes into the first overtime to defeat Eastern Mennonite, 1-0 at Kerr Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Maroons improved to 7-6-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the ODAC. The Royals dropped to 7-6 and 5-3 in the ODAC.
Grunewald scored her third game-winner of the season and the ninth of her career as she propelled her team to their fifth ODAC win of the season. The senior midfielder had season-bests in shots (9) and shots on goal with four in the match.
The school's all-time assists leader moved into a tie for fifth all-time in career points (93), eighth in career goals (32), fourth in career game-winners (9), ninth in career shots (180) and fifth in career shots on goal (86).
Kristin McCoy had five shots, three on goal in the win. She moved into second all-time in career shots (250) and third in career shots on goal (132).
The women are above .500 for the second time this season, outshot the Royals, 18-5, 10-4 in shots on goal and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Maroons remain unbeaten in overtime as they tied with then #2 Lynchburg, 1-1 and Greensboro, 0-0 for a 1-0-2 record in overtime decisions.
Abi Diffenbach finished with nine saves for EMU while Lindsay Kooiman had four in goal for the Maroons.
The women will travel to Greensboro, NC to take on Guilford College on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The Maroons are 20-4 all-time against the Quakers. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
