Men's Soccer - 12-3-2, 8-1-1 ODAC
The men's soccer team defeated Bridgewater, 9-1 on Tuesday to clinch the regular season ODAC Title and the #1 seed in the ODAC Tournament. They will get to host throughout the ODAC Tournament at Kerr Stadium. They are the defending ODAC Champions and have won four titles since 2001.
A local product from Hidden Valley High School, Kayvon Sarmadi, has scored three goals and dished out two assists for eight points on the season. Chris Collins, a junior transfer, is another local product out of William Byrd. He has shined as of late on the offensive end, leading the Maroons with six goals along with three assists for 15 points on the year. He had the only goal in a 1-1 tie at Lynchburg last weekend. He also had two goals and one assist in Tuesday's win against the Eagles.
The nine goals against Bridgewater was the highest scoring output of the season while the defense has been the story of this season. They have nine shutouts on the year, including five in a row, which is the second most in school-history. They have only allowed more than one goal once against Randolph-Macon in one of their three losses this season. As a team, the Maroons are ranked sixth nationally in goals against average and 20th in shutout percentage. Senior Goalkeeper Adam Thompson is ranked nationally in save percentage and goals against average. Fellow Seniors Shaman Douglass and Michael Walter have six goals each to lead the team.
Women's Soccer - 10-6-2, 8-2-1 ODAC
The women's soccer team clinched a #4 seed and will host an ODAC Quarterfinal match this weekend. This team is full of local talent. It all starts with two seniors, Meredith Grunewald (Hidden Valley) and Kristen McCoy (Patrick Henry), both Roanoke, Va. products.
McCoy, who has been a three-time All-ODAC selection, is second all-time in career points (111), goals (50), shots (259), shots on goal (136) and game-winners with 11. She has 10 goals this season and had two in an 11-1 win against Randolph in the regular season finale.
Grunewald, who was a two-time All-ODAC selection throughout her career, has anchored this team to finish the season with five-straight wins. She is the school's all-time assists leader with 34, third in career points (108) and game-winners (10), fourth in goals (37), fifth in shots on goal (91) and eighth in shots (196). Her 16 goals and 12 assists are second and third, respectively in single-season marks.
Sophomores McKenzie Garst (Cave Spring) and Jessica Welfare (Hidden Valley) have been a staple in the Maroons lineup over the last two seasons. Garst scored her first goal of the season last weekend against Randolph-Macon as a defender. Welfare has had more headers than any other player on the team and can win just about any 50/50 ball on the field. She was a D3Kicks All-South Region player last season.
Volleyball - 23-3, 7-3 ODAC
The Roanoke College Volleyball team has set many school marks in this historic season. Their 23 wins are only one shy of tying the most wins in school history while the 23-3 mark has already clinched the best record ever at Roanoke. They will compete in the ODAC Tournament hosted by Hollins University on Fri.-Sat. Nov. 7-8 with the Quarterfinal match starting at 6:30 p.m.
The 10-0 start was the best in school-history and the women head into their final match of the regular season against Virginia Intermont on Nov. 4. The women are currently riding a nine-match win streak.
This is a star-studded team of local athletes, starting with former standout and Roanoke Valley product Blair Trail. The 10-year head coach for the Maroon Volleyball program is the winningest coach in school-history with 187 wins and is the second-highest among active ODAC Coaches in career wins. She was the last player voted first-team All-ODAC back in 1998.
She has players this season that she coached in travel ball that have joined her collegiate program and recruiting the local talent has paid off. Senior Marcy Conner (Hidden Valley) is ranked among the top-10 in career blocks, kills, hitting percentage and attacks. Caitlyn Long, Maggie Wagner and Kelsey Largen all are Cave Spring products and have won two Class AA state titles for the Knights. Long, a junior, is the school's all-time career digs leader (1234) and is among the top-10 in career assists and service aces. She has recently moved from Libero to setter, replacing injured freshman setter Kate Feldman (Patrick Henry) who was among the top of the ODAC in assists at the time of her injury. Wagner, a Radford transfer, is following in her coach's footsteps in becoming a star performer at Roanoke. Trial transferred from Radford after two seasons to have a stellar two-year career for the Maroons. She is second on the team in kills (263) and digs (274) while Largen leads the Maroon attack in kills (271) after a career-high 20 kills in the ODAC regular season finale against Guilford last weekend.
