Roanoke had two women's soccer players represented on the 2009 VaSID Women's Soccer All-State Team announced this week. Both Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)and senior Alida Haslett (Bryn Mawr, PA, Radnor)garnered first-team honors.
Welfare, a local product of Hidden Valley, earned all-state honors for the third-consecutive season. The three-time All-ODAC selection started in all 19 matches while leading the team in shots (60) and shots on goal (33). She finished second on the team in goals (8) and points (18) while posting two assists and two game-winners. Welfare also earned NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region honors for the third-straight year.
Haslett, from Bryn Mawr, PA, was voted team captain this fall and led the backfield for the Maroons. A two-time All-ODAC selection, she started in all 19 matches this season and 60 of her last 61 games over her career. The three-year starter at defender is a two-sport athlete at Roanoke, as she will start for the defense of the women's lacrosse team in the spring. She was named NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Third-Team last month.
The Maroons finished 12-7, 7-4 in the ODAC. They earned a #4 seed and advanced to the ODAC Semifinals, where they fell to top-seed Virginia Wesleyan for the second-straight season. They faced a tough scheduled this season, in which four of their seven losses and five opponents came against teams currently playing in the NCAA Tournament.
