Roanoke drops Season-Opener to Concord (WV), 3-1
SALEM, VA --- The women's soccer season got underway this afternoon against Div. II Concord (WV), but fell to the Mountain Lions, 3-1 at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are 0-1 while CU improved to 2-1 on the young season.
Gemma Nortcliffe led the Mountain Lions with a hat trick with three goals, including seven shots, six on goal. Ellin Torstenson added an assist in their second win of the season.
Roanoke's Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam) scored her first collegiate goal with just under 12-minutes remaining in the match as scored from the top of the box. Ashley Manning (Katonah, NY, Somers) had four shots on the afternoon, followed by Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley) and Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg), who totaled three, one on goal.
The Maroons held a slim 17-14 shot advantage along with six corner kicks to Concords' one on the day. Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View) stopped seven shots for the Maroons while Concords' Kacey Hillderbrand had five saves.
The women will travel to Tennessee to take on Milligan College on Saturday, Sept. 5. It will be the Maroons first meeting against the NAIA affiliated school. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
