Roanoke College women's soccer is ranked eighth in the latest NCAA South Atlantic Regional Rankings announced this morning. The Maroons are currently 10-5 on the season.
The women are looking to secure a #4 spot in the ODAC Tournament and defeated Guilford, 3-0 yesterday afternoon to help their cause. Roanoke currently holds a 6-3 record in the conference and are tied with Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon for fourth in the latest ODAC standings.
The Maroons are 8-4 against South Atlantic region competition. Above them are fellow ODAC members Washington & Lee (3rd/10-1-1), Virginia Wesleyan (4th/12-3) and Lynchburg (5th/10-2-3).
Roanoke is led by freshman Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)with eight goals for 16 points on the season including four game-winners. Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)has five goals and one assist to her claim for 11 points, followed by both Carmen Graves (Christiansburg, VA, Christiansburg)and Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield)with two goals and two assists each. McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who was named ODAC Player of the Week this season, leads the team with five assists. Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)has 55 saves on the season and has totaled seven shutouts on the year.
Head Coach Phil Benne now has 17 10-win seasons during his 21-years at Roanoke after defeating Guilford. The 2009 senior class of Alida Haslett, Margaret Houston and Gina Valles have been a part of four-straight 10-win seasons.
The Maroons will take on Randolph-Macon this Saturday in a big ODAC match-up as both teams are trying to secure that #4 seed in the ODAC Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. It will be senior day as the team will recognize the three seniors prior to the start of the match.
