Salem, VA- Roanoke tied Milligan 1-1 in its season-opener Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons now post a record of 0-0-1, while the Buffaloes are now 1-0-1 on the young season.
Milligan got out to an early lead as Rachel Martin scored an unassisted goal just three minutes into the contest. McKenzie Garst (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)evened the score with just over five minutes left in regulation. Her goal deflected off goalkeeper Heather Crumplen's outstretched arms and into the back of the net to make it, 1-1 and held on for the tie.
The Maroons outshot the Buffalos 23-5, with a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. They also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Lindsay Kooiman (Fredricksburg, VA, Mountain View)recorded three saves in goal on the night for Roanoke, while Crumplen registered nine saves for Milligan.
Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam)led Roanoke with five shots, three on goal. Jessica Welfare (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)contributed three shots, two on goal while freshman Sarah Bradley (Richmond, VA, Deep Run)produced eight shots in her first collegiate match.
The Maroons will host the Roanoke Invitational this weekend, September 4-5 and will take on Emory at 11:00 a.m. to kick-off the tournament. Lynchburg will battle Shenandoah in the second match of the day, starting at 1:30 p.m.
