Barnard Scores Hat Trick in Roanoke's Season Opening 7-0 Win
LYNCHBURG � The Roanoke College women's soccer team rolled in its season opener, 7-0 over Averett University in the Shellenberger Classic on Friday evening.� The Maroons open the season with a record of 1-0, while the Cougars are 0-1 after the first game.

Marlana Barnard led the Maroons with three goals, all scored in the first 34 minutes of the game.� This is the first hat-trick for the Maroons since Ashley Barnes tallied three goals in a 5-0 win over Hollins on October 25, 2013.� Barnard finished the 2013 season with three goals and three assists.� This is also the second consecutive season that the Maroons have opened with a shutout, besting Birmingham-Southern 3-0 in 2013.

Barnard started off the scoring for the Maroons just 1:24 in to the first half, netting the game winner on a breakaway.� The Maroons fired off 10 more shots before finding the net again, as Barnard hit her second at 30:27, scoring off of a rebound.� Barnard capped her third just four minutes later, scoring off of a turnover, completing the hat trick.� Freshman midfielder Meagan Ryan got in on the action before the end of the half, finishing off of a crossing pass from Taylor Sayegh to enter the half with a 4-0 Roanoke lead.

It took the Maroons 27 minutes in the second half to find the back of the net again, as freshman Adelyn Fitzgerald scored her first career goal.� Her shot was assisted by Abbe Guarino.� Ryan scored again at the 81 minute mark off of a pass from Ashley Barnes.� Just two minutes later, Roanoke would score the final goal of the game as Fitzgerald potted her second, with the Maroons earning the 7-0 victory.

Barnard led the Maroons in shots with eight, followed by Ryan with four.� SierraLynn Johnson, Nathalie Torres and Ashley Barnes each fired off three shots in the contest.� Sarah Dvorak earned the win, making one save in 61 minutes of play.

Averett finished the game with one shot, taken by Ebonee Strother.� Ashley Jones played all 90 minutes in net for the Cougars, tallying five saves.

The Maroons led overall in shots 37-1, while also holding the advantage in corner kicks, 4-0.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, August 30th, as they play Meredith College in the Shellenberger Classic.� That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
