Salem, Va. --- Newcomers Kelsey Largen and Maggie Wagner, along with junior Caitlyn Long were each named to the 2008 All-ODAC Team announced last weekend. Largen and Wagner were each named second-team while Long garnered honorable mention honors.
It has been the first time since 2003 that two Maroons have been named on the second-team since 2003. It is also the first time since 2004 that three players at Roanoke have been on the All-ODAC Team. All three players came from nearby Cave Spring High School, where each has two Virginia Class AA State Championships to their claim.
Largen, a freshman outside hitter, led the team and was ranked fifth in the ODAC in kills (294). She is 10th all-time at Roanoke in single-season kills per game (3.09) and attacks (862). Her 26 aces were second on the team while her 217 digs were fourth for the Maroons. She had 16 matches with at least 10 kills or more, 20 on two occasions with a career-high 22 against Randolph-Macon. She had seven matches with 10 digs or more with a career-high 22 against Emory & Henry.
Wagner, a sophomore outside hitter, was second on the team and sixth in the ODAC in kills (292). A transfer from Radford, she averaged 3.04 kills per game and finished second on the team in digs (299) and attacks (794) while her 18 aces was third on the team. She had 15 matches with 10 kills and 10 digs or more, including a career-high 19 kills and 20 digs on two occasions.
Long, a junior libero/setter, led Roanoke in digs (359), aces (38), and was second in assists (470). Even though she played half the season as a libero, Long still was ranked in the ODAC in digs (8th) and aces (10th). She filled in for injured setter Kate Feldman and averaged 9.7 assists per game during the second half of the season. The school's all-time digs leader (1245), Long is also ranked seventh in career aces (107) and ninth in assists (610). She is ranked in the top-three in single-season digs, breaking her freshman mark (419) with 477 as a sophomore. She was third in that category this season with 359 digs.
The Maroons finished 24-4, 7-3 in the ODAC to finish fourth in the conference. The record and the 24 wins were the best in school-history. The 10-0 start was the best in program history while the 11-game win-streak was the second-longest behind the 2002 team with 16. Head Coach Blair Trail has won 188 games in 10 seasons to become the school's longest tenure and winningest coach in school-history. She is the second-highest among active ODAC Coaches in wins.
