Maroons defeat Virginia Intermont in regular season finale
Bristol, Va. --- Head Coach Blair Trail and her squad achieved yet another milestone in a 3-0 win at Virginia Intermont this evening. The Maroons, now 24-3 on the season, clinched the best record and tied the 2002 team for most wins in school history.
The Maroons won on the road for the ninth time this season and finished with a 9-2 record in away games. The wins (9) and the record on the road is the third best in school history.
Roanoke won with scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-13. It was the sixth-straight win in the series (6-1) and was the first meeting against VIC since 1981.
Maggie Wagner led the Maroons with 10 kills and nine digs. Setter Caitlyn Long finished with 27 assists and 11 digs along with three kills. Libero Emily Martin had a team-best 15 kills on the evening. Kelsey Largen and Erin Burnop contributed seven and four kills, respectively. Lauren Reznik had a season-high seven digs with an assist and a service ace to pace the Maroons.
Largen needs seven more attacks to move into the top-10 in that category. She has 801 on the season and is also ranked ninth in season kills per game (3.09). Long, who now has 349 digs on the season, passed Melissa Slusher ('03) and Kyle Highfill ('93) to move into third which makes her 1-2-3 in single-season digs. The school's all-time leader in digs broke her own record last season with 477 as a sophomore. She had 419 to set the freshman record in 2006. She now needs only six more assists to move into ninth all-time.
As a team, the Maroons moved into fifth all-time for digs in a season, passing the 2002 team, who had 1481. The team currently has 1488 heading into the post-season.
Roanoke, a fourth-seed in the ODAC Tournament, will take on fifth-seeded Bridgewater in the ODAC Quarterfinals this Friday at Hollins University. The Maroons are 19-32 all-time in the ODAC Tournament and have not advanced to the semifinals since 2004. Roanoke is a #4 seed for the third-straight season and the fifth time since Trail has been involved with the program (1997-pres). The highest seed the Maroons have been in the tournament has been a #2 back in 2000 and 2002.
The women won in five sets in a come-from-behind victory over the Eagles at Harrisonburg, Va. Sept. 23. The Maroons are 12-43 all-time vs. Bridgewater, 4-10 since Trail has been the head coach. The last five wins over the Eagles have gone the distance, winning in five sets. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
