EMORY, VA --- Roanoke dropped an ODAC match in five sets to Emory & Henry on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 9-10, 3-5 in the ODAC while the Wasps improved to 13-4, 2-3 in the conference.
The Maroons played much better against the Wasps in the second match of the season after being swept in three sets during the Maroon Invitational on Sept. 5. They fell with scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25 and 10-15.
Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)finished with 16 kills to lead the attack for Roanoke followed by Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring), who totaled 13 kills and 17 digs. Lynsey Ferris (Roanoke, VA, Northside)had nine kills and four blocks (two solo). Entering this weekend, Ferris needs only five block assists to pass her sister, Ashley Ferris for 10th on the all-time list at Roanoke.
Morgan Grant (Abingdon, VA, Abingdon), coming off an illness, performed well as she added eight kills and four blocks (one solo). Rachel Hawkins (Winchester, VA, Millbrook)totaled eight kills and a team-best five blocks (two solo). Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)finished with a team-high 21 digs to lead Roanoke. She has now moved up three spots into sixth all-time in career digs at Roanoke.
Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)totaled a team-best 49 assists along with 16 digs. She moved into seventh all-time in ODAC History in career digs with 1532. Long needs only 41 assists to become the only player in Roanoke College history with over 1,000 assists and 1,500 digs. She also needs 24 assists to move into sixth on the school's all-time assists list.
The women return to action this weekend in Danville, VA as they compete in the Averett Invitational on Oct. 9-10. They play against Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. followed by Ferrum at 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday they battle ODAC-foe Washington & Lee at 10 a.m. and wrap-up the tournament with a match against Greensboro at 2 p.m.
