VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Roanoke held an 8-6 lead midway through the fifth set, but Virginia Wesleyan came out on top to win the set and the match, 3-2 at the Batten Center Thursday night. The Maroons finished the regular season, 21-6 overall, 7-3 in the ODAC. The Marlins are now 17-9, 7-3 in conference play.
The scores of the match were 25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-11. In the final set VWC was up 8-7 when the teams switched sides of the court, but the Marlins were penalized for being out of rotation twice, so the game resumed with Roanoke holding an 8-6 lead. VWC answered back with a 7-2 run to take the match.
Maggie Wagner finished with 17 kills and 15 digs while Kelsey Largen totaled 14 kills and 18 digs. Kylie Lucas added 12 kills along with four blocks. Shannon Stone paced Roanoke with 43 assists as Emily Martin led the Maroons with 21 digs.
The women will play in the ODAC Tournament hosted by Hollins University in Roanoke Nov. 5-6.
